Homecoming Scotland 2009 is a country-wide programme of over 300 events and activities that, from Burns' Night (25 January) to St Andrew’s Day (30 November), will show Scotland's great contributions to the world. Walker Evans (November 3, 1903 – April 10, 1975) was an American photographer best known for his work documenting the effects of the Great Depression. He said that his goal as a photographer was to make pictures that are "literate, authoritative, transcendent". Many of his works are in the permanent collections of museums, and have been the subject of retrospectives at such institutions as The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Go on reading here.

This year marks the Golden Anniversary of The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), an agency of the US government which was established on July 29, 1958, and began operations on October 1st. As part of the celebration of 50 years of technological innovations and scientific discoveries, NASA has developed a special website that offers a collection of images, videos and interactive features, including a tour exploring NASA’s past, present and future.

NASA also celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Apollo Program with a tribute to the Apollo missions.

In fifty years' time there will be many improvements when it comes to transportation. Flying cars will not be trendy by then and they will have to "step aside" to make room for transportation machines which will be coming out to market. Scientists won't have been able to add a heuristic analyzing method into robots, instead they will be converting people into robots by adding electronic modules and microchips into their heads. In fact, people will be controlled by computers that will be part of them. This internal system will be really capable. It will control everything that happens inside us including the beating of our heart. It will include a GPS (Global Positioning System) for an easier tracking of our movements. At first, it will be employed to track delinquents, and if the case is severe enough, "penetrate" their minds, control them, punish them and, finally, kill them. It will seem to be an efficient way of security but, as always, hackers will be very interested in these tempting new possibilities. These people won't content themselves any longer with stealing from our bank accounts, they will have our lives to play with. By that time, I will be retired. I will have been working as a commercial pilot for over thirty-four years. I will be one of the last real flying pilots. After I retire, technology will replace the need for pilots in flight companies but I will have had enough of flying for a lifetime.

Of course I am. I believe nobody can escape from it. It does not matter how hard you try to avoid advertising: it's everywhere. You could live alone in a cave and you could probably see sometimes advertising aeroplanes crossing the sky. The world we have made is an empire of purchasing and selling, and money is the engine that makes it all move, so it has become the most important thing.

I don't usually watch TV, mainly because I don't like commercials at all: I hate the idea of somebody trying to influence me to make me think that I need things that aren't really necessary in my life. But, anyway, I see lots of banners on the Internet, and there are many advertisements anywhere you look in the street: shops, posters ... Even when you are wearing designer labels, you are publicizing them.

If you don't see advertisements, you don't think you need their products. But once you've seen something and somebody has told you how useful and cool it is, automatically you want to have it. On the other hand, I believe luxurious things attract us someway. I don't know exactly why: maybe when we see that something is expensive, we believe we will be more important if we can buy it. But we don't become important if we get it, we are only more stupid and insecure, because we're trying to give a good image of ourselves to everyone basing it on how much money we have. But that does not define us as a person.

Vanity Fair magazine has an impressive photographic collection. The National Portrait Gallery exhibition includes vintage and modern prints and celebrates the masters of this great art form, from Edward Steichen, Man Ray, Helmut Newton and Cecil Beaton to Annie Leibovitz and Mario Testino.

Vanity Fair's first period, from 1913 to 1936, is represented with portraits of personalities such as Albert Einstein, Charles Chaplin, Pablo Picasso, Fred Astaire, Louis Armstrong, Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn.

Vanity Fair suspended publication in 1936. The second period, from the resurrection of the magazine in 1983 up to the present day, includes film and theatre stars as well as writers, athletes, style icons, and business titans, with portraits of Robert De Niro, Arthur Miller, Demi Moore and Margaret Thatcher amongst many others.
